First things first, determine what changes you want to make and prioritize them. Whether it’s updating fixtures, adding storage, or simply refreshing the decor, having a clear plan will help you stay on track and avoid unnecessary expenses.
The first item I like to start with is planning the look and feel of the space. What style am I going to go with? I head straight to Canva and to the drawing board. I actually do this with all of our rooms in our house and start out small and work our way up. I know some may not have the skills to do this which is why I offer this service HERE. I can share some of my design mockups for additional rooms later on. Below is a clear mockup of our downstairs bathroom which is a half bath.
This is the start of the project. I play around with colors, textures and lighting for this space. I matched the flooring with the rest of the home which is a Tarkett Harvest Pine LVP. The rest of the look comes from inspiration from our Organic Modern /Traditional feel of our home. It’s easier to change details here instead of purchasing pieces that ultimately may not work in the space.
Bathroom Upgrades on a Budget
One of the most cost-effective ways to transform a bathroom is by painting the walls. Choose light, neutral colors to make the space feel larger and more open. If you want to add a bit of personality, consider an accent wall with a bold color or patterned wallpaper. We started out with a seafoam green in this bath and updated it by painting it a soft gray.
We also replaced our old light fixtures with this updated modern piece. The value to making your home look more expensive is in the details.

The last pieces I work on can be bigger ticket items such as the storage and hardware. I say this can be big ticketed simply because it includes the vanity. We have not purchased our vanity for this bath yet however I do have one picked out and it is shown in the mockup. It’s the Ove Decors Pembroke 30 in vanity from Bed Bath & Beyond. It is most likely the most expensive piece of our bath however all of the other items are budget friendly.

Small Bathroom Upgrades
Small touches can make a big difference. Update your bathroom accessories like soap dispensers, toothbrush holders, and towels. Let’s recap.
We talked about the plan stage first. Creating a plan and a budget for the space that you’ll be updating is a huge advantage prior to starting your project. It creates clarity and a clear vision of your design prior to purchase. This helps save money on the project and allows you to see the project prior to completion.
Play around with textures and color schemes. As mentioned, we try to match and create a pallet that is cohesive with the entire home. This also includes testing paint schemes as well.
Along with paint, work on lighting which can make a huge difference and transform a space from drab to fab.
Lastly you’ll want to select maybe one or two pieces that you’re okay spending a little bit more on. This helps bring the entire project together and give that high end feel on a smaller budget.
